Hannah’s Prayer
This first lesson will be about Hannah’s prayer. Since we won’t be meeting Wednesday night (due to our monthly singing), we will continue talking about Hannah’s prayer next Sunday Morning.
My lesson plan is:
Sing:
This Little Light Of Mine
Turn on candle. Remind them that as long as they are good the candle will stay on.
Discuss prayer using the prayer box in class. Let each child say a prayer.

Read Samuel Flip Chart
Move to Storytime area (floor)with Bibles — Call each child one at a time to place their attendance picture on their chart. Place a pillow on the floor where that child is to sit. After he/she is seated, call the next child up.
Pass out Bibles — talk about what the Bible is, who it came from and how we should treat it. Review Gideon and Samson referring to posters on the wall. If they are interested, sing Gideon and Samson songs. Return Bibles to basket.
Tell Samuel’s story with Flannelgraph.

Hop! Goes the Frog (With pic of frog)
Ask children one at a time to return their pillow to the pillow tote, then sit down at the table.
Pass out watches. Review Hannah’s story with them, reminding them that they can pray just like Hannah did.

Some Thoughts On Samuel’s First Class
Yesterday’s Bible class went well. The first class with a new subject is always challenging. I’ve got new material that needs to be learned. There are usually bugs that need to be worked out. The kids are learning all new material, so they aren’t as able to participate. But, as time goes on, it all smooths out.
This week there was an added twist. We had new student in class. New to me anyway. He had been moved up to the next class, and it just wasn’t working well. He wanted and needed (social maturity) to be in my class. He can be a real challenge. I’m going to have to figure out how we can work together.
Back to the class. Samson’s flip chart was unusually long. Their were 19 pages to it. It really tested these kid’s attention span. Samuel, on the other hand, is just 9 pages long. I think they are going to learn it all very easily.
I’m already beginning to think about next quarter. We are supposed to study Saul, David and Solomon. I would like to take one each month like I did with Gideon, Samson and Samuel. I don’t think it is going to work that easily. I think it would be better if we studied David the whole month and introduce Saul (the beginning of the quarter) and Solomon (the end of the quarter) as they come up in David’s story. It should be a fun quarter. Who doesn’t love teaching about David and Goliath.

Samuel — Lesson 2
I ran out of time this weekend and didn’t get a lesson plan written up. It worked out okay because I had planned to do a repeat of the first lesson. I’ll list below what we did.
Sing:
This Little Light Of Mine
I didn’t use the candle this time for good behavior. With the addition of my new student, I figured it would be off all the time anyway.
Discuss prayer using the prayer box in class. Our prayer box has a picture wheel on the front with pictures that go along with the song: Pray in the morning, pray at noontime pray in the evening pray anytime. I sang that with them and then we talked about what we should pray for — ask for things we need, praise God, thank God for what He has given us. I said the prayer so they could imitate it later and to give us more time for the class.

Move to Storytime area (floor)with Bibles — Call each child one at a time to place their attendance picture on their chart. Place a pillow on the floor where that child is to sit. After he/she is seated, call the next child up.
Read Samuel Flip Chart. We had 7 in class, so our floor space was limited. I may have to reconsider doing this when we have so many in class.

Samuel — Lesson 2
This lesson we will concentrate on the birth of Samuel. It should be the last time I read Hannah’s Prayer flip chart. We have a take home to remind them about the baby.
Sunday’s lesson went well. I’ve had to change some of my “behavior modification” techniques because of my new student. But, all in all, I think we’re going to do okay. Tonight I should have a smaller class. No more than 6, maybe less. Wednesday night is always a challenge because they are tired. That reminds me, I need to get my 2 down for a nap or it will be a rough class.

Singing Timeline. Using Large Timeline pics (these are just smaller versions of the posters on the wall), let the children put Gideon, Samson and Samuel in order on the Sequence trees. Sing the Gideon, Samson and Samuel songs as the pics are put in their place.
Samuel Flannelgraph. This has been set up for the past 2 lessons, but I’ve never gotten to it. This would probably be a great night to introduce it.
If there is time, use the hand pointer to review the books of the NT. As the children have a turn at saying the books, ask them to put their pillow up and sit at the table.

Class Went Great
I was a little concerned about class tonight. I wasn’t in the best of moods. I was tired and had other things on my mind. When I got there, all the kids were already there. Puzzles were all over the table. They were working hard putting their puzzles together, but it just looked like a mess to me. I got to talking to them and helping them clean in preparation for class. They are so sweet. All my problems disappeared. We had a great class.
I tried to teach them more about prayer. I encourage them to thank God for something, praise God about something and ask God for something. I prayed a short prayer showing them what I meant. They were all excited to give it a try. The first little boy to try always sings his prayer and does it the exact same way every time. I tried to get him to pray like I had talked about. He would have none of that. It was similar for the rest of the class. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks and you can’t teach a pre-schooler to say a different prayer.
Eli The High Priest
This morning we will talk about Eli and what a High Priest does. I have a flip chart that depicts some of the High Priests and Priests’ jobs in the tabernacle or temple. I hope to have the children make Ephods for the take home Wednesday night. Today our take home is Samuel the little boy. It will help reinforce the lesson of Hannah taking Samuel to live with Eli.

Eli The High Priest Lesson 2
Am I the only one that thought Samuel was a high priest? There is defintely truth to the fact that if you teach you learn more than the kids do. I had it in my head that Samuel became the high priest (or at least a priest). Actually, there is no way he could since he is not a Levite. I will have to go back and redo a couple of cards in my flip chart. To set the record straight, Samuel was a judge and only a judge. If I’m wrong, please correct me.
Last week, I didn’t send home the little boy Samuel take home. A friend of mine made about 5 take homes for me to use this month. Since we were talking about the High Priest, I sent home the scroll. It is a piece of paper with a passage from Psalms written on it. It is rolled up and tied with a ribbon. It represents the fact that High Priests and Priests taught the people about God.
Tonight I’m going to let them help me make ephods to take home. These will consist of a piece of yellow poster board (about 6″X6″) with a string to go around their neck. I will cut out jewels of different colored paper to represent the jewels on the ephod. The kids will get to glue their jewels one their ephod and then wear the ephod home. In case you didn’t know (and to remind me) there were 12 jewels. Each one represented one of the 12 tribes of Israel. You may notice that this is all in the future tense. It is now 3PM. I’ve got to get this done before 7PM. The 2 little ones are bathed, dressed for church, and at least laying down for a nap. Now’s my chance to get it done.

Samuel Grows Up:
Our lesson today will concentrate on Samuel growing up. We will learn about what it was like to be a child in Bible days. What they ate, how they played, how they learned, etc. The take home for today is a of Samuel as a young boy.

Discuss prayer using the prayer box in class. I will let each child say a prayer that wants to. We’ve been concentrating on saying 3 things in a prayer. Praise God, Thank God, and Ask God for something. At first I thought it might be too much for them. All they had been doing was thanking God for everything. But, Wednesday night I saw a great improvement. One of the boys even prayed for a child who wasn’t there. I hadn’t even talked about those that were missing.

Samuel Grows Up:
This lesson will be a repeat of Sunday AM for 2 reasons. The first one is, I didn’t get to everything. I ran out of time to do the Childhood Flip Chart. The 2nd reason is class was very small. We could have a whole new crew tonight. The 3rd reason is that I’ve got to go out of town today. If I get back in time to teach, it will be just in time. I’ve asked a friend to be ready to teach for me. So, this lesson plan may be for her. I hope she can read it:).

Samuel — The Last Lesson
This week is our last time to talk about Samuel. Next week we begin the study of the kings. Of course, Samuel is involved in anointing the first 2, so he’s not gone forever.

How Clothes Were Made Flip Chart. We’re using this flip chart to emphasize the fact that Hannah gave Samuel a coat each year. That was no small thing back when clothing was all made by hand.
The take home this week is a set of paper dolls. One picture of Samuel, Hannah and 2 coats. These came from Soul-ly for Kids. Pass out and talk to the kids about them. Put their name on their envelope and take up until the end of class.

I love this plan (I start teaching this material next week). We don’t have lesson plan books or felt materials etc. Did you have a certain place you found these or you had a book to follow? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
