Instead of assigning memory work to the student and sending them home to do it on their own or with the help of their parents, most of the memory work done for my class is done in class. We read the entire passage, we sing the passage (if there is a good song to go with it), we write the passage, we say the passage and we draw the passage.

During each class session we read the entire passage. I want them to read along with me. I want them to see the words — every time we meet. Even if they aren’t yet fluent readers I want them to follow along. For some students, it is necessary for me to point out each line or even word but as the weeks progress, they soon become familiar enough with the passage that this help is no longer needed — at least as much.

After reading the passage we look closely at the section we are going to memorize that day. We read it. We discuss it. The students copy it. There is a picture that goes with each section that should help them remember that section. This picture is especially helpful for those readers discussed above.
