This file folder activity is designed to help students have a deeper understanding of John 1:1-5. The activity requires the students to look up the passages on the cards (Genesis 1:1, Genesis 1:26, John 8:12 and John 9:5) and match them to the portion of John 1 that it describes.

The Word Was God — Look It Up (PDF)

For example: John 1:3 (All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.) is similar to Genesis 1:1 (In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.)

Also: John 1:1 (In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.) is similar to Genesis 1:26 (Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”)

And: John 1:5 (And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.) is similar to John 8:26 (Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”)

Finally: John 1:4 (As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.) is similar to John 9:5 ( As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.)
