Salt and Light

The following activities were designed to be used in the stations mentioned in the Life of Christ lesson plans. During these lessons, the students attempt to memorize 6 lists or passages of scripture. Doing these activities do not ensure memorization but they allow the student to spend some time manipulating the words and phrases they are trying to memorize. Also aiding in memorization are the Life of Christ Project Folders.

The Salt and Light passage can be found in Matthew 5:13-16 NKJV

The first two sets of pictures are each an activity that involves unscrambling key words in the passage. A brief description of how the folder is made and how it works is included under each picture of the first set. Scroll on down to see the “Put It In Order” envelope activities.

The scrambled words activity encourages the student to pay close attention to specific words in the text. Each activity, made with a colorful folder, has instructions as well as the passage to look up in their Bible. For continuity in the class, all passages are memorized using the New King James Version.

The words in light gray are scrambled. Behind each word a paperclip has been glued before gluing the paper to the folder. The pocket is made by gluing a square of paper on three sides to the top portion of the folder, then the whole folder is laminated. A slit is cut with an xacto blade to open the pocket.

The cards have the correct word on the front and a piece of magnet attached to the back (I like to use business card magnets cut to size because they are thin). These cards are stored in the pocket.

The student determines which card is the correct version of the scrambled word and places it in its appropriate place revealing the corrected version of the passage. BTW, the magnets are there just to help keep the cards from sliding all over the place while doing the activity. They do not hold them firmly enough to lift the file folder up and expect them to stay in place.

The following activity highlighting the “light” portion of the passage is made and used just like the one above.

Each of these activities are stored in a white 6″x 9″ mailing envelope. While you can print the title and instructions directly on the envelope and it looks really professional that way, I find it easier to just print the title and instructions on regular paper and glue it on. The envelope can be laminated if you’d like.

The cards are two-sided. One side has phrases from the memory passage. The other side has a picture representing the passage — in this case a salt container. Cut the cards into strips separating the phrases. The student, with word side of cards facing up, puts the phrases in order.

After the student is satisfied that he has the phrases in order, he flips each card over and puts it down in its place.

If the phrases were put in the correct order, the picture will appear. If not, it will be obvious to the student it was incorrect and where it was incorrect.
